As you may have read, several neighborhoods in East Baton Rouge Parish as well as the state have voted to establish crime prevention districts. These districts are political subdivisions of the state designed to prevent crime using education, security patrols, and environmental design. A crime prevention district requires legislative approval and must be approved by the residents. The monies are collected yearly when residents pay property taxes. A board of commissioners appointed by state and local officials determines how the money is spent and is subject to audits. This board is separate from the civic association board.
Of the 500 homes in our neighborhood, about 250 homes generally pay dues. This limits our patrols to 32 hours per month. Due to the increase in crime in the parish, we would like to take a proactive approach and increase our patrols significantly. We would also like to continue services such as the phone tree and our newsletter.
With a crime prevention district, everyone contributes and everyone benefits. We would like to hear from you on this matter. You can go to our online contact form to make comments or ask questions. We will discuss this issue at our yearly meeting in January.
